Fleas and Ticks

Each year we see owners who have no idea their pet has been infested with fleas or ticks.  Often these pests have made a home on the dog and in the house before being noticed.  Here are some tips on how to help your pet to live pest free:

1.       Treat the dog. Here at Puppy Love’s we will give your pet a flea and tick shampoo that is safe for even a 6 week old puppy.  This will kill all of the existing fleas on the pet.  (Ticks are tougher and may take longer to kill.)

2.       Treat your pet’s environment.  If your pooch is an inside dog (even part-time) you will need to kill the fleas/ticks inside. This is preferable on the same day that you treat the dog.  This can best and least expensively be accomplished by the use of home foggers.  These are sold at your local discount or grocery store.  Follow package directions.

3.       Treat your pet’s yard.  You will need some flea/tick granules or Sevin dust to apply to the yard.  Again, follow package directions.  If your dog is running loose you may wish to confine him until this can be brought under control.

Now that these steps are completed you will want to apply a flea/tick inhibitor such as Bio-Spot, Advantix or Frontline to your pet.  These are available from your vet or local store.  They usually do not directly kill the fleas/ticks but will kill the flea/tick when it bites your pet, thus ending the life cycle.

Due to the nature of the flea/tick life cycle you will need to repeat steps 2 and 3 about every 10 to 14 days.  Repeat as necessary.

It’s not impossible to deal with these pests but it is important to do so for the health and well being of your pet and family.  Your pet will thank you!
